"Tonefloat claims that this release is the zenith of Dirk Serries’ Fear
Falls Burning project, having reached its “point of destination” of
intimate exploration in the midst of grand drone gestures.
These
are heavy, monolithic songs made up of simple repeated riffs and
hypnotic interaction between Serries’ guitar and instruments played by
guest musicians, which include bass, drums, and even vocals. There are
tinges of metal that only become clear on the closer, “I Provoke
Disorder,” which has straight-up black-metal vocals in an epic piece
resembling Sunn 0))). But mostly this sheds the sometimes obvious
“darkness” attached to metal – there’s an element of contemplation,
openness, or even serenity in these pieces that I enjoy, especially on
the unresolving “Chorus of Dissolution.” But all this is heavy stuff,
and retains the powerful guitar-drone mastery that I’ve enjoyed in Fear
Falls Burning’s work."

Vidna Obmana. When he set up Fear Falls Burning he found a new avenue
for musical

never could have exorcised in Vidna Obmana. Eight years later Fear Falls

“Disorder Of Roots” appears after a little hiatus (Serries having always
been very prolific) bringing is back to the main essence of this
Belgian project. We’re joining an experimental universe where elements
from soundscapes, drones and guitar experiment are melting together in a

The guitar for sure remains a
very essential instrument on this album. There where ‘pure’ guitar
lovers would be easily shocked hearing Serries abusing and maltreating
the phallic instrument of all rock bands, we simply can say Fear Falls
Burning is playing and using the guitar in a different way. It all looks like he’s less interested by
the sound of the instrument and is more interested in creating new sounds, which are then manipulated.
On top of it all you’ll perceive heavy, bombastic drum sections, which
are sometimes reminds me of the early years of The Swans. Other parts
and
pieces are getting closer to
pure cinematographic experiences and we here can re-discover the
soundtrack/soundscape inspiration of Dirk Serries.
So this album is a kind of constant move in between post-apocalyptic
rock experiments and pure soundscapes. I like this album for not falling
down in a kind of monotonous and repetitive boredom, but constantly
exploring new paths. I can’t say that this is one of the most
accomplished releases from Fear Falls Burning, but it for sure is a
fully accomplished piece of experimental work."

duister ambientproject Fear Falls Burning af. De zoektocht naar patronen
en emoties in minimale landschappen van luidruchtige drones en
gitaarnoise bereikt zijn eindpunt, de queeste is voltooid. Tientallen
releases – vaak op gelimiteerde vinyl – heeft het verhaal mogen duren,
maar met ‘Disorder of Roots’ en een afsluitend feestje op 2 juni in de
Paradox in Tilburg wordt het boek dichtgeklapt.
Voordat Serries zich met Microphonics volledig overgeeft aan de
zoektocht naar het absolute minimalisme, de essentie van geluid en
muziek, is er nog deze release: een album waar de geschiedenis van Fear
Falls Burning wordt afgesloten in vier diverse tracks.
Opvallend is de aanwezigheid van enkele gastmuzikanten, een eerder
zeldzame verschijning. Zo treedt de Zweed Tim Bertilsson (Switchblade)
in de tweede episode van de eerste track binnen met zwaar rollende
drumpassages. Die zorgen niet meteen voor ritmische binding, maar
verzwaren met hun eigen wil de luidruchtig zinderende gitaardrones tot
een indrukwekkend stuk muzikaal dreigement.
Ook bevriende artiest Frank Kimenai (programmator van Incubate,
Nederlands meest gerenommeerde independent festival) doet zijn duit in
het zakje en laat zijn bas ronken en scheren, waarmee een eveneens extra
dimensie wordt aangeboden. Een soort van diep bedwelmende dubmantra
zorgt wel voor de nodige cohesie waardoor ‘Virtue of the Vicious’
uitgroeit tot heerlijk lome, instrumentale ambientmetal. Gitaren blijven
groeien en zorgen voor een volle, donkerrode inkleuring terwijl bas en
drum voor een zich steeds herhalende sequentie zorgen: een stevig stuk
drogerende slowcore.
Nog opvallender is echter de verschijning van Michiel Eikenaar (Dead
Rivers), die zowaar zorgt voor zanglijnen in het overweldigende
sfeerlandschap van Fear Falls Burning en daarmee het finale eindpunt van
de expeditie vormgeeft. In de vierde en laatste track (‘I Provoke
Disorder’), komt hij na een vijftal traag wentelende doemminuten
opzetten met diepe, schorre grunts. Opklimmende gitaardrones met de
nagalm van een kerkorgel zorgen voor een heus apocalyptisch scenario
terwijl Eikenaar de aanhoorder penetrant toefluistert. Dit is pure
horror, fatalistische muziek, de “
Roots of Disorder“ (om even
met de titel te spelen). Het hele verhaal mondt uiteindelijk uit in een
nazinderende, allesoverheersende toon: het eindpunt.
Het is wat moeilijk om te stellen, want zowat elke release van Fear
Falls Burning verdient een verdict als ‘indrukwekkend’. Maar dit album
is toch misschien nog het meest penetrante en overweldigende van
allemaal. Acht prachtige muzikale jaren van dit duistere ambientproject
worden met verve afgesloten. Een ding staat nu al vast: Fear Falls
Burning zal net als zijn voorganger VidnaObmana door velen gemist
worden."

Vidna Obmana, Dirk Serries' eerste episode in de ambient/drone-cultuur, ging 23 jaar mee;
Fear Falls Burning vijf jaar. Na een pak releases waaronder enkele splits met
Nadja en
Year Of No Light is dit de zwanenzang. Op
Disorder of Roots wordt Dirk bijgestaan door
Phil Petrocelli (
Jesu, Jarboe) en Magnus Lindberg (
Cult Of Luna) op drums en Michiel Eikenaar (
Nihill, Dodecahedron) achter de microfoon. James Plotkin deed de mastering.
Dit vierluik is opnieuw een sonar aan echografische trillingen
geworden. In het begin kriebelt het even aan je gehoorgangen, maar na
enkele minuten vormen deze alkaloïde frequenties al snel een voertuig
naar hogere sferen, naar diepere sferen, naar ver afgelegen sferen. Op
The Roots of Rebellion
dwarrelen snaargeluiden doorheen een muur van zinderende drones die nu
en dan zuchtend bassen. Een lichte astrale trance wordt opgewekt door
tussentijdse tintelingen van elektronische aard, zich een weg banend
naar je netvlies om er vervolgens je cyberverbeelding in werking te
zetten. Een dik kwartier loos worden.
Virtue of the Vicious is van een gans andere aard.
"Post-rockend", met traditionele instrumenten, zoemend en dreunend op
een lange golf van feedback en distortion, schemerend als de ondergaande
zon, maar tegelijkertijd ook scherp stekend. Een dubbele gelaagdheid
vol contrasten. De concave geluiden lopen over in
Chorus of Dissolution,
dat een fijn gecontroleerde onderhuidse dynamiek bezit, soms verdoken
in de constant aangehouden tonen, soms gewoon ook minimaal in de
uitbundigheid opduikend uit de mist. Magnus Lindberg is duidelijk
aanwezig, zijn ritme redt me.
I Provoke Disorder is inderdaad provocerend. De smerige
schruwel van Michiel Eikenaar, de disharmonie die met grandeur en verve
neergezet wordt als ware het de normaalste zaak van de wereld, de trots
waarmee de geluidsmuur opgetrokken wordt. Het is een heldhaftig afscheid
geworden, als een mooie begrafenis die niet bestaat.

"Fear Falls Burning delivers a modern drone classic. After eight years, Belgian experimentalist Dirk Serries is bringing his much-loved Fear Falls Burning project to a close with one last dip into the blissful waters of his guitar drones. Disorder Of Roots is a deep, lush landscape of layered loops and thumping drum patterns crafted with the skill of a master, eliciting a true sense of hypnotic comfort and thoughtless relaxation. This is no simple turned-up-to-eleven ringing drone, this is a meticulously planned venture into the hinterlands of the human mind, a daring voyage into that mysterious gap between the conscious and subconscious.
More than anything, Disorder Of Roots is an enthralling emotional rollercoaster, continuously building and releasing the tension over all four parts with a skill that leaves the listener wracked and breathless by the end. You cannot simply just dip a toe into these songs, or even the album, the magic is in the aural tale that is narrated from beginning to end; to do otherwise would be to miss the point, and renders this immersive experience nonsensical and confusing.
Why is Disorder Of Roots deserving of such a high score in comparison to a number of other excellent records of late? In essence, it is the magnitude with which it envelopes the subject within its mesmeric tendrils. Few albums are able to so completely take over and block out all external thought, putting this on a par with the true greats of the genre like Earth 2 or ØØ Void. Even more so than previous Fear Falls Burning records, Disorder Of Roots is spacious enough to truly relax, yet not so drawn out as to fall into lulls of boredom.
When the disc first arrived, I sat in the middle of my living room with the music turned right up, feeling every rumble and pulse through the floor and sinking into a strange daze as the massive drones took over. Very few albums ever have such an impact, and even with expectations sky high and trepidation on full, this still managed to shock, amaze and enthral in equal parts.
The continual steps away from the pure guitar drones of He Spoke In Dead Tongues is certainly desirable in a world now full of artists recording hours of feedback, though the heavy use of drums will continue to divide the crowd. On all four tracks they are hugely prominent in the mix, at times even distracting from the swelling centrepiece of Serries' delicate loops. But the album would lose some of its impact and drive without them I believe, and become prone to the genre's biggest trap – meandering into nothingness.
And just as this journey comes to an end, one final surprise is saved for the last few minutes. After three albums and countless other releases - all fully instrumental - Michiel Eikenaar adds his piercing, demonic wails as 'I Provoke Disorder' draws to a close. Unsettling and disturbing, it took a few listens before they started to feel "right" as they cut through the sparse, distorted loops. As the piece builds up to its crushing conclusion, they meld into the vast wall of noise, becoming less like vocals in the conventional sense and more like another tortured sound.
I for one will miss Fear Falls Burning now that it has been put to bed, but in many ways Disorder Of Roots is the most fitting note on which to bow out. This comes as close to the perfection of an ideal as you or I are likely to hear for a long while." The Music Fix - UK
"5 out of 5 stars ! Fear Falls Burning is the work of Dirk Serries, also known for his ambient project vidnaObmana. According to the label, Serries had decided to end Fear Falls Burning, but 'resurrected [it] for a concluding album statement . . . and a last salute.' I have previously reviewed one of the noisier releases from Fear Falls Burning ('I'm One Of Those Monsters Numb With Grace'), and although I quite enjoy noise, it didn't really work for me. This album, on the other hand, was wonderful. If this is what the future holds for his new Microphonics project, I need to check out where he's heading. In some ways this is a combination of the styles of both vidnaObmana and his other work as Fear Falls Burning. When I put it on, I was surprised at how much like vidnaObmana the opening track was. The guitar drone was present, but it was much more peaceful. The progression moves closer to the Fear Falls Burning end of the spectrum as we move through the album.
The final track, 'I Provoke Disorder,' includes yelled vocals buried in the mix of slowed down, dissonant guitar drone mixed with slow pummeling percussion. What keeps it interesting is the use of dynamics throughout, drawing the listener in through the use of calm, quiet passages. Overall, this is a slab of droning dissonant goodness that is well worth picking up. Evidently this also comes in a limited edition clear vinyl double 10 inch in gatefold sleeve, complete with a CD copy of the album (limited to 200 copies), and a CD in a deluxe mini album gatefold sleeve. Nog eenmaal wou Dirk Fear Falls Burning laten schitteren met het album ‘Disorder Of Roots’.
Het is de ultieme langspeler van FFB waaraan gastmuzikanten uit de ondergrondse metal scene hun medewerking verlenen. Inderdaad het allerlaatste, want Serries vindt de tijd rijp om een nieuwe uitdaging aan te gaan. Microphonics is de naam. Het definitieve doek voor Fear Falls Burning valt op 2 juni in de Paradox club in Tilburg. Naast Dirk Serries zullen ook Tim Bertilsson (drums), Frank Kimenai (basgitaar) en Michiel Eikenaar (zang) van de partij zijn.
Openingstrack ‘The Roots Of Rebellion’ begint minimalistisch als een drone/ambient gedrocht. Pas halfweg komt het groepsgevoel meer tot uiting wanneer drums, bas en orgel de track naar een ongekende climax leiden. De trage, diepgaande opbouw ervan is fenomenaal en je wordt meegezogen in een draaikolk van ongewone gewaarwordingen. ‘Virtue Of The Vicious’ is meer ingetogen, sluimerend, maar op een bepaalde manier ook gespitst. De gitaar drones blijven ook in ‘Chorus Of Dissolution’ het basisprincipe. Via loops en tonnen feedback verkrijgt men een veellagig effect dat nog eens extra impulsen krijgt via naar voor gemixte, felle drumpatronen en diepe bastonen. Ook hier schakelt men halverwege over naar een andere intonatie en kiest Serries voor rauwe, repetitieve fuzztonen. ‘I Provoke Disorder’ is het meest experimentele luik met Michiel Eikenaar die death metal grunts uitspuwt. Op zich leent de loodzware muziek zich hier wel toe en kan op de keper beschouwd zelfs doorgaan voor doom metal of toch een variant ervan. "Dirk Serries is een Belgische muzikant, die ik volgens mij al mijn hele actieve muziekleven tegenkom. In eerste instantie is dat vanaf 1985 met het diepgravende, ruimtelijke en tot de verbeelding sprekende project Vidna Obmana ook wel als vidnaObmana geschreven, hetgeen Servisch is voor optische illusie. Serries legt dan ook altijd een surrealistisch geluid, gelaagd aan de dag. Muziek waarbij je jezelf in een parallel universum waant of iets dergelijks. Voor mensen die meer diepgang zoek in de ambient kan ik zijn albums, die op diverse toonaangevende labels zijn uitgebracht, ook van harte aanbevelen.
Na 2007 gebruikt hij deze naam niet meer. Verder is Serries ook altijd op zoek naar de essentie van het geluid en weet hiermee eigenlijk altijd te verrassen. In 2004 besluit hij om het conceptuele Fear Falls Burning in het leven te roepen als vervolg op Vidna Obmana. Tijdens het bestaan van die band exploreert hij de essentie van het geluid ook verder in het project Microphonics. Nu is ook het einde van Fear Falls Burning aangebroken met nog één slotoffensief, namelijk het album Disorder Of Roots. Zoals vaker bij de werken van Serries is het een verrassende optelsom geworden van zaken ervoor. Sowieso brengt hij nooit rechtlijnige muziek, maar muziek met meerdere lagen waardoor er een ruimtelijk effect ontstaat.
Nu brengt hij zijn meer ambientgericht klanklandschappen, die een permafrostachtige onderlaag heeft die bestaat uit gruizige geluiden. Hierop groeien de overige muzieklagen op spannende wijze. Samen met Tim Bertilsson (drums), Frank Kimenai (bas) en zanger Michiel Eikenaar (uit Dead Rivers) geeft hij zijn intrinsieke gitaarpartijen en elektronica op intrigerende wijze vorm. Ondanks het relatief rustige geluid is het ontzettend dreigend wat ze hier laten horen, met steeds op bedachtzame wijze veranderende muziek. Als donkere wolken die langzaam verschuiven, botsen en in elkaar opgaan. Dat is in elk geval in de eerste 3 stukken, die bij elkaar al 37 minuten duren. Maar in het slotstuk “I Provoke Disorder”, de titel zegt het al een beetje, neemt de dreiging toe middels zware drumslagen. Na een minuut of vijf komt er een soort kerkorgel bij en hoor je het rustige grunten van Michiel, die als een Engel des Doods de Apocalyps lijkt aan te kondigen. "Au départ il y avait Frenzy Of The Absolute, supposé dernier chapitre de la trajectoire musicale atypique de Fear Falls Burning, ce projet très personnel et très expérimental du prolifique Dirk Serries. Ça, c'était en 2008 et cette entité semblait être, selon les voeux de son créateur, parvenu à son "terme", après tout de même une petite vingtaine de productions... en trois ans seulement. Puis, le très pointu Tonefloat (Bass Communion, Final, vidnaObmana) se mit en tête de rééditer plusieurs des oeuvres de FFB, jusqu'à susciter un intérêt grandissant (c'est quand même le genre de trucs que l'on ne découvre pas sans s'y être au préalable un peu préparé) et donner envie à Dirk Serries de lui donner une conclusion digne de ce nom.
Exigence et profondeur de champ dans l'écriture de ses compositions : Fear Falls Burning manie l'ambient comme un horloger règle ces montres. Millimitré, chirurgical même s'il n'en donne pas toujours l'impression, l'air de pas vraiment y toucher. Sur le premier quart d'heure de l'album, qui tient sur une seule et même piste, "The roots of rebellion", il développe une musique portant la marque d'un esprit autrefois torturé mais désormais plus apaisé. Plus conscient sans pour autant être résigné. Et si le titre du morceau évoque quelque chose d'assez punk dans l'âme, rien ne transparaît à l'écoute de ces quinze minutes et quatorze secondes d'une symphonie ambient parsemée de quelques mouvements de cymbales, manifestations percussives d'une première piste sonore voulant maintenir son auditeur dans un état d'éveil semi-conscient, une torpeur narcoleptique que vient prolonger la suite immédiate de cette pièce inaugurale : "Virtue of the vicious".
Disorder Of Roots est ainsi une oeuvre qui prend peu à peu, volontairement ou pas, l'apparence d'un bande-son de film, celle d'un long-métrage en forme de road-trip erratique dont on imagine la bobine se dérouler sous nos yeux. En témoigne le très beau et languissant "Chorus of dissolution" qui parvient à rendre la musique de FFB plus "accessible" qu'à l'accoutumée. On nage presque dans des eaux post-rock et ces volutes ambient évanescents qui enveloppent alors l'auditeur "ne font" qu'accroître inexorablement ce sentiment d'abandon qui s'immisce peu à peu en lui. On se dirige alors vers une longue mais envoûtante sortie de scène en forme d'apothéose cotonneuse et c'est là que l'on se souvient qu'au casting du "backing band" entourant Dirk Serries sur ce Disorder Of Roots , on trouve Frank Kimenai (Anaphylactic Shock), Phil Petrocelli (Jesu, Jarboe), Tim Bertilsson (Switchblade), Magnus Lindberg (Cult Of Luna) et Michiel Eikenaar (Nihill), soit quelques éminents spécialistes ès musique(s) d'écorchés vif. Mais pas que évidemment... même si du coup, il n'est plus si surprenant d'être complètement retourné par l'effrayant final de l'album. Cet "I provoke disorder" vénéneux et lardé de fulgurances black metal assez insoutenables pour le non-initié. Effet garanti et rupture radicale avec les atmosphères des épisodes précédents, un petit twist final osé certes mais à l'image du maître d'oeuvre de Fear Falls Burning : insaisissable." THE ROOTS REBELLION
Der Titel sagt es schon, denn das Album beginnt so, wie Fear Falls Burning
begonnen hat, als Dronegewitter aus der Gitarre. Ein Sound legt sich über den nächsten, im Hintergrund entsteht ein vibrierender Sound, der als eine Art Rhythmus den Song trägt. Dann ein Bruch. Die Drums von Phil Petrocelli und der Bass von Frank Kimenai gesellen sich zur Gitarre von Dirk Serries und wandeln den Song komplett um. Das Ende hat begonnen.
VIRTUE OF THE VICIOUS
Drums von Tim Bertilsson setzen ein, die Gitarre baut eine hallende Atmosphäre auf und der Bass von Frank Kimenai fügt sich episodenhaft ein. Der Song wiegt sich ein, indem die Drums und der Bass immer wieder aussetzen und somit einen ganz eigenen Rhythmus erzeugen. Währenddessen fügt sich der Bluesdrone von Serries immer weiter in den Sound ein. Ein fast schon zugängliches Stück Fear Falls Burning.
CHORUS OF DISSOLUTION
Dieser 20-Minüter lässt sich eindeutig Zeit, Zeit, die es braucht um diese Droneoper zu erzählen, die hier vorgetragen wird. An den Drums sitzt diesmal Magnus Lindberg, der hier druckvoll und akzentuiert spielt. Frank Kimenai am Bass fügt sich vorsichtig dem Sound bei, während Dirk Serries seiner Gitarre wieder die feinsten bluesigen Drones und Orgeltöne (oh ja, wie ich diesen Sound liebe, wenn die Gitarre wie eine alte Hammond Orgel röhrt) entlockt, die sich zum Ende hin in eine Ambientlandschaft wandeln und ohne Drums und Bass vor sich hin fließen. Das Ende naht.
I PROVOKE DISORDER
“Ich verursache das Chaos” gesteht uns der Titel des letzten Tracks. Alles fängt mit dem Trio Serries/Bertilsson/Kimenai an. Noch zurückhaltender im Rhythmus und in der Gestaltung von Klanglandschaften. Serries baut keine Loops auf, sondern konzentriert sich auf minimalistische Bluesdrones, die stark an sein anderes Alter Ego Microphonics erinnern. Die Stimmung ist düster und bedrückt, aus dem Hintergrund heraus nähern sich dann endlich die vermissten Droneflächen und nach fünf Minuten setzten überraschend die Vocals von Michiel Eikenaar ein. Die ersten und letzten Vocals in einem Fear Falls Burning Song. Stellt euch ein Biest vor den Toren zur Hölle vor, das in Ketten liegt. Die dickste Kette schnürrt ihm die Kehle zu, aber das Biest will nicht aufhören von sinkenden Schiffen, zerstörerischen Feuern, Gräbern und Tod zu erzählen. Grässlich schön, so klingen die Vocals. Die Dronelandschaften nehmen Überhand und legen sich über den restlichen Sound, um zu Ende hin zu verebben. Das wars. Alles ist gesagt, alles liegt in Flammen, alles zerfällt zu Asche.

"Dirk Serries, better known as Vidna Obmana, started Fear Falls Burning project more as a sort of minimalistic diversion, but in spite of its interesting evolution towards a somewhat original concoction of experimental noise-rock and shamanic music elements, he announced that project came to a close. Thankfully he changed his mind, even if it seems this album wisely named "Disorder Of Roots" should be its very final act, but while we look forward to a not so desirable confirmation, we can appreciate this new issue. Four long-lasting tracks where Dirk's mastery in molding entrancing drones through microscopic variations embosses guitar tones which sound twirling with heady fumes since the initial track "The Roots Rebellion", where it seems the author let the listener inhale till the moment when, after some hiccups of guitar slides, Phil Petrocelli drums begin to pop with regular cues while over-stretched tunes gradually overtops in the sonic space. The following track "Virtue Of the Vicious" follows an analogous movement but drumming cues come at the outset of the anthem: in spite of droning rarefaction, there are more points of tangency with progressive-rock and so-called post-rock, but I can't rule out some old crossover stuff like Starfish Enterprises or Drift Pioneer could come to mind, which normally lingers on the same chord or echo for the whole playing length. On "Chorus of Dissolution" Dirk's accomplices, bass-player Frank Kimenai and Cult Of Luna's member Magnus Lindberg on drums, manage to sustain the hypnotical and gently abrasive drone which sounds like a filling of a mesmeric pool. On the occasion of Fear Falling Burning's last bequest before its supposed death, the track "I Provoke Disorder", a voice strikingly breaks in, the one by Michiel Eikenaar, who disguises it in the semblance of some distraught agonizing fiendish creature which manages to peek in heaven after a long paralysis for having been put on chains by kind permission of its torturer, while drone get more and more corrosive and drums beating time gets heavier and heavier."
